Re:Play, the new club night from Noise of Art founder and resident DJ Ben Osborne, invites just one seminal guest DJ each month.

This month sees Diesel, half of DJ duo Rocky and Diesel and Xpress 2, join Ben on the checks for a carnival special.

Born out the UK’s Balearic DJ movement, Diesel’s earliest influences were warehouse parties where rare groove, soul, jazz, go-go and hip hop music were mixed together.

Following the arrival of Acid house, Diesel became a core member of Xpress 2 and one of the pioneers of UK house, responsible for early Nineties underground anthems such as ‘Muzik Express’, ‘London X Press’ and ‘Why Not?’.

Meanwhile, as part of the Ballistic Brothers, Diesel had helped shape the downbeat sound of trip hop.

By the turn of the Millennium Xpress 2’s deep house sound had risen from the underground to the top of the UK charts, scoring hits with classics such ‘Lazy’, featuring David Byrne of Talking Heads, and ‘Give It’, with vocalist Kurt Wagner of Lambchop.

His most recent LP, last year’s The House of Xpress 2, saw Diesel, and partner Rocky, update their trademark sound with new influences drawn form their globe trotting DJing activity. Meanwhile their Thursday evening show for Ministry Radio sees Xpress 2 continue to steer a pathway through 21st century house music of all genres.

Which period Diesel will revisit at Re:Play is anyone’s guess.

Resident and long standing London DJ, Ben Osborne, will be mixing the genres and periods in sets either side of Diesel, to keep spotters and dancers on their toes.

Re:Play gives guest and resident DJ space to express themselves in full length sets – with one twist. During the set the guest DJ will play a section of music from a particular point in their career. The period selected isn’t announced before the night.

Noise of Art founder and Re:Play/ Slipped Disco resident, DJ Ben Osborne, returns to the National Portrait Gallery for a weekend warm up. He’ll be playing music against a back drop of portraits inspired by the Queen: Art & Image exhibition; from Cecil Beaton to Pietro Annigoni, Andy Warhol, Annie Leibovitz, Lucian Freud, Thomas Struth and Gerhard Richter. There’ll be some swerve balls, so expect to hear anything from royalty referencing gospel to queens of soul, kings of disco, first ladies of funk and at least one mash up of a Queen song.

Noise of Art returns to Latitude on Friday 13 July to present a three day Psychedelic Curiosity.

The happening starts with a psychedelic nightclub in the film and music tent on Friday, followed by three days of events on a purpose built stage that pops out of a 1965 VW camper van. The van is a vintage hippy festival vehicle that’s been converted into a solar powered stage.

The line-up includes international bands, up and coming acts and film festival debuts.

On the 45th anniversary of the Psychedelic movement, Noise of Art’s show re-imagines why Victorian design and fashion was a main ingredient in the Sixties Psychedelic movement.

It imagines that two universes collided in 1967. One was a steampunk world. The other was the Carnaby Street of Sixties London. Which is why, amongst other things, Peter Blake’s cover for Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is based on a Victorian circus.

A DJs DJ and respected producer, Justin Robertson’s career in dance music goes back to the Madchester era, when he span at clubs such as Spice and Most Excellent, clubs frequented by two lads called Tom and Ed who would later become The Chemical Brothers.

Having shifted back South to London, Robertson’s career has also seen him constantly shift rolls as DJ, producer and lead singer of bands such as Lion Rock and Thee Earls. His latest project is Deadstock 33s.

His music style is just as varied, having championed the new Balearic movement, as well as Big Beat and house and techno music. As a DJ, Justin always wears many hats – both literally and metaphorically. Depending on the night you’ll hear him delve into disco rarities, acidic techno, Chicago house, Balearic classics, reggae, northern soul and pop.

In the studio, Robertson has reworked Bjork, Felix Da Housecat, Chicken Lips, Stopmakingme, Fatboy Slim and many more.

Celebrating this month’s transformation of Bedroom Bar into a new two floor nightclub, restaurant, bar and live music space, DJ Ben Osborne (Noise of Art) launches his new club night RE:PLAY.

Featuring only one seminal guest DJ each month, RE:PLAY is a back to basics club night that gives guest DJs space to express themselves in full length sets and dancefloors time to get on their groove – with one twist. During the set the DJ will play a section of music from a particular point in their career. The period selected won’t be announced before the night, so it’s up to the train spotters to guess the era.

With the first six months of guests to be announced soon, the first guest DJ is Severino.

Hailing from Northern Italy, Severino literally grew up on a diet of Cosmic Disco. A young disciple of Italo legend Daniele Baldelli – the man who gave cosmic its name – Severino became a DJ in his own right during the Nineties.

After moving to the UK to manage Italian label, Disco Inn, he hooked up with Rob Wood (Editor of Jockey Slut) and Michael Morley (Zomba Records/ Lucky Numbers) to start the infamous Happy Families club night. It was soon snapped up for a residency at Fabric.

At the same time he became a fixture at hip venues on London’s gay scene, taking his trade mark house mixes into such clubs as Crash and AM and starting the CODEX club with fellow Italian jock Nico De Cigelia.

His next big break came at the end of the era dominated by electro clash. Jim Stanton, at the time running the seminal electro night, Cock, decided to open a neo disco club in London (Horse Meat Disco) and Severino had the perfect pedigree for resident DJ.

The growth of disco over the last seven years has seen Severino rise to international fame, particularly in New York, which has more or less adopted him as his third home.

In the process he’s became a conduit for the new NYC sound, importing New York’s cool handclap soundtrack back to the UK. Meanwhile he’s formed underground house outfit Hyena Stomp with Nico and started releasing his own material via labels such as Munich’s cutting edge Gomma imprint.

RE:PLAY will be inviting Severino to revisit a set from a classic period of his past on Saturday 31st March, as well as getting him to unearth new gems. Meanwhile DJ and host Ben Osborne will be keeping the dancefloor moving with a trademark genre blending set.

The London show marking the release of Phenomenal Handclap Band’s new LP (Form & Control), sees New York’s purveyors of psych, soul, and cosmic disco enter Noise of Art’s psychedelic steam punk world.

Phenomenal Handclap Band’s sound has roots in New York, San Francisco, San Paulo and London. Imagine Curtis Mayfield and Deee-Lite throwing a Nu-Yorican house party with Afro-beat, Cosmic Italo-disco, Turkish psych and ‘70s West Coast music thrown in.

On the 45th anniversary of the UK’s Psychedelic movement, Noise of Art’s new show is inspired by contemporary steam punk and the 19th Century imagery that inexplicably became prevalent in the late Sixties. It imagines that Sergeant Pepper, Pink Floyd and The Avengers were the result of two universes colliding in 1967; throwing people from a parallel steam punk world into swinging London.

The resulting psychedelic Victoriana features coal-fired flower power, contemporary dancers, curiosities of nature, magic lanterns of psychedelic imagery, steam-powered cosmic house, psyched-out-disco and coal-fired techno.
