Win Wicker Man DVD

In the run up to Noise of Art’s headline slot at the long running Elefest music, film and art festival in London, we’ve teamed up with Elefest and Studio Canal to give away a copy of the DVD of the soon to be released ‘Final Cut” of the 1973 film – overseen by director Robin Hardy.
Noise of Art’s night has been given a Time Out Critics Choice (CLICK HERE) and features acclaimed actor Nathaniel Parker performing passages from Ritual (David Pinner’s book that inspired the film), over music from Coldcut, Justin Robertson and Ben Osborne, plus dance and visuals sequences from The People Pile and Overlap and silent cinema.
Other events include the ultimate foodie Stockmrkt night market, Don Letts Djing to classic film The Harder They Come, an underground mural tour with artist David Bratby, and evening BBQ with G-Bop, UK Skate film festival with Reeps One, London to Brighton screening with Johnny Harris and a closing night party with live music and club night with Smoke Fairies.

Wicker Man fires into Elefest – Tickets on sale NOW

Continuing Noise of Art’s celebration of 100 years of electronic music, we are bringing our psychedelic influenced electrofest, Wicker Man Disco Inferno, to Elefest.

Noise of Art’s Wicker Man Disco Inferno features Justin Robertson (Deadstock 33s), Matt Black (Coldcut), Ben Osborne (Noise of Art), The People Pile and Overlap, with very special guest, the star of stage and screen, Nathaniel Parker (Inspector Lynley, Merlin, The Audience) on voice.
The event will be taking place at a specially created pop up cinema and warehouse space, The Elefest Hotel,77-85 Newington Causeway London SE1 6BD, as part of the weekend long Elefest urban festival, taking place in and around Elephant and Castle you can buy tickets HERE NOW for £5 or £10. Pictures From Noise of Art® at Latitude Festival

Noise of Art’s electronic music and cross platform art event, Wicker Man Disco Inferno, was inspired the 1973 film (Wicker Man) and the book that inspired the film (Ritual – click here for info).
We worked with the book’s author, David Pinner, creating a music and spoken word sound track, spoken live by Nathaniel Parker (best known for playing Inspector Lynley in the Inspector Lynley Mysteries TV series, as well as for playing Gordon Brown opposite Helen Mirren in The Audience).
Alongside this new music by Groove Armada and Ben Osborne, played by seminal electronic musician Si Begg and DJ Ben Osborne, was joined by cross platform art performances and artworks by Overlap, The People Pile, Mark Scott Wood and the Noise of Art performers – including wearable art pieces based on Luigi Russolo’s intonorumori.

BFI, Latitude, Wicker Man & forthcoming events

Following fabulously fun and innovative shows at BFI and Latitude, including Nathaniel Parker ducking out of Royal Shakespeare Company rehearsals to do live vocals, we’re jumping into the holiday season with a new Club launch by our sister outlet Slipped Disco – more details below.
Thank you to everyone who came along to the first three of Noise of Art’s 100 Years of Electronic music celebrations at Latitude, British Film Institute Southbank and Village Underground. And special thanks to Nathaniel Parker, Si Begg, Coldcut, Mental Overdrive, Frost, Slow and all the performers and artists taking part in the 100 year project so far. Nat Parker was a revelation on vocals. There’s much more to come. Our gratitude also to David Pinner, author of Ritual, the book that inspired Wicker Man, who selected passages for the show.

The Wicker Man Disco Inferno Brings 100 Years of Electronic Music to Latitude

Following last year’s celebration of psychedelic music at Latitude, Noise of Art returns to celebrate the ongoing connection between the post psychedelic period and electronic music.
On the 40th anniversary of the cult film, Wicker Man, Noise of Art debuts its electronic music, film and art show inspired by the 1973 British cinema classic.
The event combines nightclub, cinema, theatre and contemporary dance, including a DJ set by Groove Armada, accompanied by book readings and spoken word performance from stage and screen star Nathaniel Parker.
Parker’s leading roles include staring in the TV series Inspector Lynley Mysteries and Merlin. He has just finished a West End run, appearing alongside Dame Helen Mirren in the Award winning stage play, The Audience. He will be reading passages from David Pinner’s Ritual, the book that inspired the film, which have been specially selected for this show by the author.
Cult London club royalty DJ Tom Findlay, of Groove Armada, will make a rare festival appearance, alongside DJ Ben Osborne, founder of Noise of Art, playing dance beats to accompany the spoken word performance. The show features Noise of Art’s renown cinema-graphic visual projections, live electronic music (including electronic violin) and a newly created contemporary dance piece.

The second major event in Noise of Art’s 100 years celebration sees electronic music return home, as the BFI’s Sonic Cinema presents “Noise of Art’s Electric Nights”, celebrating a century of Electronic Music and Silent Cinema.
Featuring Pudovkin’s classic 1926 film Mother, with short films from the 1920s and live music and DJ sets by: Coldcut; Mental Overdrive; Aggie Frost; Slow; Gaggle; Ben Osborne, the event takes place at BFI Southbank, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX
Marking 100 years since Luigi Russolo began the story of electronic music by writing ‘A Manifesto for an Art of Noises’, tonight brings electronic music back to its earliest home – not the nightclub, but the cinema.
Russolo first performed with a proto-synthesiser in 1914 and after WWI he started soundtracking early film in cinemas in Paris. The evening connects a century of film and electronic music.
The main feature is the UK debut of a new live score to Vsevolod Pudovkin’s 1926 masterpiece Mother. The music has been created by cross-border collaboration between celebrated Russian electronic musician Slow, Norwegian cosmic disco outfit Mental Overdrive and electronic artist Aggie Frost. Their live soundtrack, played in the UK for the first and probably only time, was commissioned by Norway’s TIFF festival earlier this year. Their re-working breathes new life and intensity into the revered film.
Accompanying the feature, pioneering electronic act Coldcut will be putting new music to films from the Russolo era, while Noise of Art’s Ben Osborne adds music using recordings of Russolo’s own sounds. The screening will be followed by a party in the Benugo Bar with a performance by Gaggle. Tickets £15, concs £11.50 (Members pay £1.50 less)

With Noise of Art’s next 100 years of electronic music event scheduled to take place on 12 July at BFI Southbank, followed by a new festival show debut on 21 July, here’s a quick update of forthcoming dates, including nights at Big Chill House, Bar Concrete at Hayward Gallery and National Portrait Gallery.
Friday 7 June, Big Chill House, Pentonville Road, King’s Cross London N1 9N. 7pm – 2 am. Free. The Slipped Disco team returns to the Big Chill House with resident DJs Ben Osborne and Rupert The Brewer and guests.
Saturday 8 June Bar Concrete at Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road London SE1 8XX. It’s Free Entry and runs from 7.30pm – 1am. Featuring DJ sets from Noise of Art head honcho Ben Osborne.
Time Out says of Slipped Disco events: “Obscenely fun electronic oddness. This pleases us very much indeed, primarily because of the anything-goes music policy that sees anything from classic techno, punk-funk, galactic house, deep down and dirty disco and other dancefloor dynamite do the rounds.” (Time Out 2013)

Last 100 Years of Electronic Music Tickets

On Friday 17 May Noise of Art starts its celebrations of 100 years of electronic music with a wide ranging night of electronic sounds, headlined by Eccentronic Research Council, Sheffield’s alt electro outfit fronted by celebrated and cool as f**k actor Maxine Peak (her off The Village, Silk, Shameless and Dinner Ladies).
There’s a wealth of mighty pioneering DJs playing between 7pm and 4am, including Jim Stanton (The Cock/ Horsemeat Disco), Justin Robertson (Deadstock 33s/ Bugged Out/The Hacienda), Fil Ok (Nag Nag Nag), Scottee (The Roundhouse/ Anti Social), alt all girl choir Gaggle, Noise of Art founder, DJ Ben Osborne and more guests still to be announced.
The night has been made gig of the week by Time Out’s tastemaker music team and deemed a critics choice by its club section. It has also been given a preview feature in The Guardian Guide, The Independent, CMU, M Magazine, The Londonist and many others. It runs from 7pm – 4am.

Noise of Art starts its celebration of 100 years of electronic music with a rare as hens teeth chance to see the Eccentronic Research Council, featuring Maxine Peake, live
Marking a century since Luigi Russolo, the Italian futurist, published his ‘Manifesto for An Art of Noises’ (1913) and designed what many hold to be the first synthesiser, the celebrations will see a series of music and cross platform art events taking place over the next year. The Launch party references the role Sheffield played in electronic music and the era defining music that came out of London’s clubs at the turn of the 21st Century.
Headlining the show is the Eccentronic Research Council, featuring film, stage and TV star Maxine Peak on vocals. Amongst her many roles, Peake has starred in Shameless, Dinner Ladies, Clubbed and Silk, and is about to headline the 2013 Manchester International Festival.
This is the first time Eccentronic Research Council has played in London (having turned down every previous offer) and will be the only chance to see the cross-platform band perform their acclaimed ‘1612 Underture’ in the Capital. If you miss this you have really missed out.
The core of Eccentronic Research Council, apart from Maxine, are Dean Hohner and Adrian Flanagan, two vintage synth enthusiasts who are themselves part of Sheffield’s electronic and leftfield heritage, having been members of band’s such as I Monster, Kings Have long Arms, The Chanteuse & The Crippled Claw and All Seeing Eye. They count Sheffield legends such as DJ Parrot, Jarvis Cocker and Phil Oakey in their circle.
Keeping the party going all night long, will be a core collection of London DJs from the most legendary London nightclubs at the start of the 21st Century.
Pioneering what was at times called electroclash, electro house, indie dance, new rave, disco punk, the Hoxton sound, Berlin sound and, simply, electro (but all the while trying to wriggle out of having a name at all), the clubs rebelled against the over-produced dance music of the late Nineties and looked back to early synthesiser music for inspiration; something they have in common with ECR’s love of vintage analogue sounds – plenty of which will be on hand tonight.
The clubs, such as Nag Nag Nag , The Cock, Trash and Anti Social, all returned to electronic music’s dirtier sounding roots, but came back with different takes.
Representing these clubs tonight will be Fil Ok, resident DJ and founder of the legendary Nag Nag Nag. Jim Stanton, DJ and creator of The Cock, one of the clubs, alongside Trash, responsible for the sound in London, and Scottee, the DJ and performance artist who, along with Buster, was behind Anti Social, the maddest and baddest new rave club of them all.
Justin Robertson, legendary DJ, Bugged Out resident and original Hacienda Acid houser, will be wearing his Deadstock 33’s hat, a new nom de plume that sees him delve back to the heyday of New York anti-disco in a way that only he could. Check out his sublime new LP on Munk’s seminal imprint, Gomma, to see what we mean.
Meanwhile the DJ’s DJ, Italian stallion Severino, who alongside Jim Stanton was a founder member of Horse Meat Disco (the night that brought disco back), will be flying the flag for his synthesiser inventing and electronic music fathering compatriot, Luigi Russolo.
DJ and Noise of Art founder Ben Osborne will be intervening at various points, incorporating some of the electronic sounds created by Luigi Russolo into his contemporary dancefloor set. And there’s more to be announced…
