Noise of Art starts its celebration of 100 years of electronic music with a rare as hens teeth chance to see the Eccentronic Research Council, featuring Maxine Peake, live

Marking a century since Luigi Russolo, the Italian futurist, published his ‘Manifesto for An Art of Noises’ (1913) and designed what many hold to be the first synthesiser, the celebrations will see a series of music and cross platform art events taking place over the next year. The Launch party references the role Sheffield played in electronic music and the era defining music that came out of London’s clubs at the turn of the 21st Century.

Headlining the show is the Eccentronic Research Council, featuring film, stage and TV star Maxine Peak on vocals. Amongst her many roles, Peake has starred in Shameless, Dinner Ladies, Clubbed and Silk, and is about to headline the 2013 Manchester International Festival.

This is the first time Eccentronic Research Council has played in London (having turned down every previous offer) and will be the only chance to see the cross-platform band perform their acclaimed ‘1612 Underture’ in the Capital. If you miss this you have really missed out.

The core of Eccentronic Research Council, apart from Maxine, are Dean Hohner and Adrian Flanagan, two vintage synth enthusiasts who are themselves part of Sheffield’s electronic and leftfield heritage, having been members of band’s such as I Monster, Kings Have long Arms, The Chanteuse & The Crippled Claw and All Seeing Eye. They count Sheffield legends such as DJ Parrot, Jarvis Cocker and Phil Oakey in their circle.

Keeping the party going all night long, will be a core collection of London DJs from the most legendary London nightclubs at the start of the 21st Century.

Pioneering what was at times called electroclash, electro house, indie dance, new rave, disco punk, the Hoxton sound, Berlin sound and, simply, electro (but all the while trying to wriggle out of having a name at all), the clubs rebelled against the over-produced dance music of the late Nineties and looked back to early synthesiser music for inspiration; something they have in common with ECR’s love of vintage analogue sounds – plenty of which will be on hand tonight.

The clubs, such as Nag Nag Nag , The Cock, Trash and Anti Social, all returned to electronic music’s dirtier sounding roots, but came back with different takes.

Representing these clubs tonight will be Fil Ok, resident DJ and founder of the legendary Nag Nag Nag. Jim Stanton, DJ and creator of The Cock, one of the clubs, alongside Trash, responsible for the sound in London, and Scottee, the DJ and performance artist who, along with Buster, was behind Anti Social, the maddest and baddest new rave club of them all.

Justin Robertson, legendary DJ, Bugged Out resident and original Hacienda Acid houser, will be wearing his Deadstock 33’s hat, a new nom de plume that sees him delve back to the heyday of New York anti-disco in a way that only he could. Check out his sublime new LP on Munk’s seminal imprint, Gomma, to see what we mean.

Meanwhile the DJ’s DJ, Italian stallion Severino, who alongside Jim Stanton was a founder member of Horse Meat Disco (the night that brought disco back), will be flying the flag for his synthesiser inventing and electronic music fathering compatriot, Luigi Russolo.

DJ and Noise of Art founder Ben Osborne will be intervening at various points, incorporating some of the electronic sounds created by Luigi Russolo into his contemporary dancefloor set. And there’s more to be announced…

With the first Noise of Art events since New Year to be announced shortly, March 2013 will see Slipped Disco return to Concrete at the Hayward Gallery, as well as the Big Chill Bar, a new piece at Crux and Train will make a one-off reappearance at the Bedroom Bar. Details below.

Fred Deakin has crossed boundaries from the start. A classically trained musician, he was a pioneer of dance music in London, where he grew up, and Edinburgh – where he lived for a decade. While in Scotland he started his artistic career as part of the Airside collective and ran several club nights.

But it was with old friend Nick Franglen, a studio programmer, who worked with Primal Scream, Bjork and The Spice Girls, that he began recording under name Lemon Jelly.

Between 1998 and 2000 they released three EPS on their own label, Impotent Fury – also the name of their seminal Brick Lane club night.

After signing to XL, they released the EPs as an LP ‘Lemonjelly.ky’, before moving onto their second album, ‘Lost Horizons’, which was released in 2002, and nominated for the 2003 Mercury Prize and Brit Award.

The last LP from Lemon Jelly, ’64-’95, featured samples drawn from the years between those two dates and came out in 2005. The band were to announce they were taking a break in 2008, but Fred continued working on his side projects, in 2006 writing electronic music for silent films and DJing at the first Noise of Art events at The National Film Theatre and Tate Britain. He released his neo-Balearic album, The Triptych, in 2007.

Most recently Fred debuted an interactive art installation for La Gaîté Lyrique in Paris in June 2012 and released the debut album from his new musical project Frank Eddie in the winter of 2012.

Fred’s career has covered everything from hip hop to house to downbeat to leftfield film tracks. What period he will re-play at RE:Play is anyone’s guess.

Resident DJ and long standing London DJ, Ben Osborne, will also be on hand with a platter of freshly cut tracks and a trademark roof bumping mix to keep spotters and dancers on their toes into the wee hours.

Noise of Art takes its surround visual experience west along the Thames to the Hog, the new, salubrious hang out in Hammersmith, for New Year’s Eve.

The New Year’s Eve Party will feature seminal DJs, music, surround projections and visuals, all washed down by a selection of fine wines and ales, including the Hogs own brew.

With more to be announced, The DJs on hand tonight include Justin Robertson, seminal Hacienda DJ, who is currently turning heads with his Deadstock 33s project with Daniel Avery. Ben Osborne, founder of Noise of Art, veteran international club DJ, one time dance music show presenter on Xfm and NME Radio, musician and writer of books.

Re:Play, the “unique club night” (Time Out) from Noise of Art founder and resident DJ Ben Osborne, invites cheeky disco edit king The Reflex in for a festive shindig.

Yet another talent to hit these shores from Paris, The Reflex has become a fixture of BBC Radio 6 Music, with specialist shows regularly playing his masterful revisions of classic and rare as hen’s teeth tracks.

His productions range from re-workings of disco from the Seventies, through eighties classics and onto rare as gold dust tracks from the Sixties. All of them worked in to effortless dance floor filling stompers. In the hands of The Reflex, even Christmas party playlists get transformed into into cool dancefloor cuts.

Getting the party started and bringing it to a roof rattling end will be host DJ and long standing figure on London’s electronic scene, DJ Ben Osborne. Ben’ll be mixing up the genres and periods with a trademark eclectic set, keeping spotters and dancers on their toes into the wee hours.

For a very special deep house and Balearic one-off, Re:Play is bringing seminal early Naughties nightclub, Train, back from the dead for a Halloween special.

For this one-off night, Scandinavia’s electronic maestro – and Balearic lynch pin – Mental Overdrive (aka Per Martinson) returns to the London stage for a very rare live performance!

Martinsen has been releasing records, creating remixes and doing live shows under his Mental Overdrive moniker since his precocious 1990 debut on R&S Records – the “12000 AD” EP.

More recently he’s released a series of well received albums for seminal Scandinavian label, Smalltown Siupersound, issued a slew of singles for Prins Thomas’ Full Pupp imprint, and a string of modern balearic classics on his own label Love OD Communications.

Alongside this release schedule, he’s found time to create transmedia art projects, write scores for Russian silent movies and produce a new album for side project Frost – all the while carefully monitoring the melting of the ice-cap and the magic illumination of the northern lights from his native Tromsø, in northern Norway.

Launched in the early 2000s, club night Train literally entered the record books when it set the Guinness World Record for the most DJs to play in one set in 2003. After residencies at Bridge and Tunnel and AKA (where !!! held an impromptu after party after their fist London gig) it settled in at Cargo, over the road from tonight’s gig.

Designed as a club that mixed live sets seamlessly into DJ sets, it soon formed a live music collective, Les Hommes Du Train, which, despite never releasing any music, attracted praise from such electronic maestros and tastemakers as Booka Shade, Trevor Jackson, Coldcut and Laurent Garnier.

Started by DJ and Noise of Art founder, DJ Ben Osborne, the early nights often featured then BBC Radio 1 presenter and Ibizan fixture DJ Chris Coco – the reknown Balearic DJ and producer. The two DJs became a regular partners at Train nights in London and Paris – and anywhere else they could persuade people to buy them a train ticket to.

Ben and Chris also played regular slots at a successful DJ bar experiment at the National Theatre on London’s Southbank.

This will be the first time these one time regular sparring partners have teamed up together in over three years.

The duo will be mixing up the genres and periods with a trademark deep house and eclectic set, keeping spotters and dancers on their toes into the wee hours.

Re:Play gives guest and resident DJs space to express themselves in full length sets, during which time they re-visit a particular period of their career.

Noise of Art presents a night of film, music, art, DJs and psychedelic curiosity over three floors and featuring The Beatles film MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR, now fully restored with a remixed soundtrack – finally shown on the big screen for the first time, 45 years after it was made.

First broadcast by the BBC in 1967, The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour’ was a product of its era while also being years ahead of its time. The film anticipated techniques that were to become industry standards , such as ad lib film scripts, mocumentaries and surreal Television comedy.

The night is inspired by the evolution of psychedelic music, from folk, through rock and soul music, to acid house and contemporary club music.

With more acts being announced, the line up sees Justin Robertson, creator of the ‘Art of Acid’ compilation, play an acid house set, electronic music pioneers Si Begg and Fred Deakin play new audio visual sets, Ashley Beedle, spin a psychedelic funk set, and Leftside Wobble and, Noise of Art founder, Ben Osborne, mix cosmic dancefloor fillers. Fiona Bevan and Laura J Martin, two of the UKs fast rising female singer songwriters, will form part of the folk connection.

They join Noise of Art regulars, The People Pile, Overlap, Your Mum, Prick Image and more to be announced, who’ll complete the immersive cinema and club experience.

Rounding off a week of events that’s seen the Beatles’ cult film, Magical Mystery Tour, shown on the big screen for the very first time, Apple Films Ltd (the film making arm of the Beatles’ company) is allowing Noise of Art to screen the film as part of Noise of Art’s cross platform clubbing event.

This is the last screening in a week of events celebrating Magical Mystery Tour in the run-up to its release on Blue Ray and DVD. It follows a gala event at the BFI Southbank on Oct 2nd, where Noise of Art will create the after show for an invited audience.

The event continues Noise of Art’s celebration of the 45th anniversary of psychedelia, which started with a sell out New Year’s eve event in London and saw three days of activity at Latitude Festival.
