Noise of Art is celebrating 100 years since the first electronic concert with a month of events in April, including the 2014 London debut of Booka Shade’s new live set on 25 April.

April marks 100 years since the first electronic music concert in April 1914, when Luigi Russolo played his prototype synthesisers in public for the first time. “Russolo was the first in the chain of the development of electronic music,” (Karl Bartos, former member of Kraftwerk).

Booka Shade are to headline Noise of Art’s month of shows celebrating 100 years since the first electronic music concert in April 1914.

Throughout April Noise of Art will celebrate of 100 years since Luigi Russolo played his debut concert using his prototype synthesisers. The month of events will culminate with special performance by leading live German electronic act, Booka Shade, at The Convergence Festival, Village Underground, on Friday 25 April.

April marks 100 years since the first electronic music concert in April 1914. Noise of Art is celebrating the occasion with a month of events and the 2014 London debut of Booka Shade’s new live set. The Berlin based electronic act are playing the flagship night of Noise of Art’s centenary events, acknowledging Germany’s role in the history of electronic music. Their new show is based on Booka Shade’s critically praised fifth album, Eve – itself recorded using vintage synthesisers.

With more acts to be announced, the events mark 100 years since Luigi Russolo, author of “Manifesto For An Art of Noises”, unveiled his prototype synthesisers in April 1914.

Alongside Slipped Disco at Big Chill House this Friday, Liquorish on Saturday 22 February and Concrete Bar, Southbank on Friday 28 February, Noise Art is busy preparing events celebrating 100 Years since Luigi Russolo first played his prototype synthesisers in 1914.

The first details will be announced soon, but in the meantime Ben Osborne and Slipped Disco slide into Big Chill House (257-259 Pentonville Road King’s Cross London N1 9N. Free Entry. 7pm – 3 am) on Friday 7 February for a night of all things dance floor. “This pleases us very much indeed, primarily because of the anything-goes music policy that sees anything from classic techno, punk-funk, galactic house, deep down and dirty disco and other dancefloor dynamite do the rounds.” (Time Out)

London electronic music and art collective, Noise of Art, continues its celebration of 100 years of electronic music with a weekend of festival events in Manchester and London on 15 and 16 November, as well as a DJ sets in the Hayward Gallery Bar on Friday 22 November from 9pm-1am.

The inaugural Louder Than Words cross platform music and word festival launches in Manchester on Friday 15 November. The event will see  Noise of Art’s Ben Osborne, spin a club based set inspired by the on-going celebration of a century of electronic music. Based on the 100th anniversary of the publication of Luigi Russolo’s ‘Manifesto For An Art of Noises’, the DJ set will use excerpts from the original pamphlet and recordings of Russolo’s own proto-type synthesisers. Hosted by John Robb, the festival features panels, discussions and such icons as Jah Wobble, Alan McGee, Hugh Cornwall (The Stanglers), Tim Burgess (The Charlatans) and Wilko Johnson. The panel on club music features Simon Morrison, Jonty Skrufff, Luke Bainbridge, Martin James and Ben Osborne.

On Saturday 16 November Noise of Art will be joining independent music promoters The Local to play the closing club night of their annual North London music festival, The End.

Held in venues around London’s Crouch End on 15-16 November the festival honours both Crouch End’s considerable pool of local music talent and international touring acts.

In keeping with this ethos, Noise of Art has invited Crouch End’s very own electronic pioneer, Si Begg, to spin alongside DJ Ben Osborne.

Long running dance magazine Mixmag recently summed up Si Begg’s contribution to electronic music: “Si Begg has been a pioneer and genre-mangler, having rocked the techno world, turned the breaks scene inside out, pre-empted ‘future garage’ by a decade, torn-up dubstep and ambient and been a vital part of Tony Thorpe’s Studio Rockers setup.”

This month Slipped Disco’s event at the Hayward Gallery takes place on the last weekend of BFI’s London Film Festival and, fittingly, it will be celebrating the launch of new magazine So Film.

The night, on Friday 18 October, will see Chris Airplays join Noise of Art’s Ben Osborne on the decks, mixing film scores into the usual blend of all things dance floor, while free copies of the magazine, fresh off the press, will be distributed to the crowd.

Meanwhile details of the next Noise of Art events in Manchester, The End Festival, Big Chill Bar and National Portrait Gallery will be announced very soon.

With Noise of Art’s autumnal events at urban festivals about to be announced, the Summer nights might be drawing in, but the festivals are still bubbling away. In the meantime there’s forthcoming Slipped Disco events at Big Chill House (Friday 13 September), Concrete at Hayward Gallery, Southbank (Friday 20 September), and East Coast Diner (Friday 27 September). Noise of Art’s electronic music and cross platform art event, Wicker Man Disco Inferno, was inspired the 1973 film (Wicker Man) and the book that inspired the film  (Ritual – click here for info).

We worked with the book’s author, David Pinner, creating a music and spoken word sound track, spoken live by Nathaniel Parker (best known for playing Inspector Lynley in the Inspector Lynley Mysteries TV series, as well as for playing Gordon Brown opposite Helen Mirren in The Audience).

Alongside this new music by Groove Armada and Ben Osborne, played by seminal electronic musician Si Begg and DJ Ben Osborne, was joined by cross platform art performances and artworks by Overlap, The People Pile, Mark Scott Wood and the Noise of Art performers – including wearable art pieces based on Luigi Russolo’s intonorumori.

Thank you to everyone who came along to the first three of Noise of Art’s 100 Years of Electronic music celebrations at Latitude, British Film Institute Southbank and Village Underground. And special thanks to Nathaniel Parker, Si Begg, Coldcut, Mental Overdrive, Frost, Slow and all the performers and artists taking part in the 100 year project so far. Nat Parker was a revelation on vocals. There’s much more to come. Our gratitude also to David Pinner, author of Ritual, the book that inspired Wicker Man, who selected passages for the show.

Following last year’s celebration of psychedelic music at Latitude, Noise of Art returns to celebrate the ongoing connection between the post psychedelic period and electronic music.

On the 40th anniversary of the cult film, Wicker Man, Noise of Art debuts its electronic music, film and art show inspired by the 1973 British cinema classic.

The event combines nightclub, cinema, theatre and contemporary dance, including a DJ set by Groove Armada, accompanied by book readings and spoken word performance from stage and screen star Nathaniel Parker.

Parker’s leading roles include staring in the TV series Inspector Lynley Mysteries and Merlin. He has just finished a West End run, appearing alongside Dame Helen Mirren in the Award winning stage play, The Audience. He will be reading passages from David Pinner’s Ritual, the book that inspired the film, which have been specially selected for this show by the author.

Cult London club royalty DJ Tom Findlay, of Groove Armada, will make a rare festival appearance, alongside DJ Ben Osborne, founder of Noise of Art, playing dance beats to accompany the spoken word performance. The show features Noise of Art’s renown cinema-graphic visual projections, live electronic music (including electronic violin) and a newly created contemporary dance piece.
